Twente-Lazio 0-2
Highlander Pedro and Isaksen secure third European win
The team
Marco Baroni as usual brought in the B team for the European game with only Alessio Romagnoli, Boulaye Dia and Mattia Zaccagni of the A team in the first eleven. First game with Lazio for Samuel Gigot and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru placed at midfield.
First half
The match changer arrived after 11 minutes. Splendid pass by Luca Pellegrini, Dia avoided the offside trap and ran towards the box, Lars Unnerstall ran out of his area and voluntarily tripped up the Lazio forward. Obvious red card, Twente down to 10 men. At this point the Dutch team retreated in defence and left the ball to Lazio.
The Biancocelesti had to change their game plan and had a few difficulties in creating chances against a team that defended tightly and very deep. In the 23rd minute, Adam Marusic crossed from the right Dia tried a volley, Przemyslaw Tyton who came in for Mitchell Van Bergen, parried. In the 26th minute Marusic tried a cross from outside the box centre-right, the ball went right through the Dutch defence and hit the post.
In the 35th minute, Pellegrini to Matias Vecino on the right, low cross to the centre and Pedro slotted the ball in the goal. But according to the linesman Vecino was offside. After a VAR check, the goal was given and Lazio ahead.
In the 42nd minute Loum Tchaouna back-heeled for Gigot who tried to chip the keeper but Tyton saved. Shortly after Pellegrini in the box tried to surprise the keeper with a shot but it was well saved. In injury time Marusic with a big whack from outside the box, Tyton parried again.
Lazio forced to attack but with a few problems.
Second half
The Biancocelesti tried to put the game to sleep and in the 49th minute splendid pass by Vecino from the right towards the far post, Pellegrini had an open goal chance but his volley shaved the crossbar. That should have been a goal. The Lazio left back had another chance in the 55th minute when he picked up a stray ball in the box, lobbed it over a defender and tried a volley which went too high. It would have been the goal of the century.
Lazio started having a few problems in midfield so Baroni sent in Nicolò Rovella and Taty Castellanos for Zaccagni and Vecino. Taty was immediately dangerous and in the 74th minute the referee gave a penalty to Lazio after a foul by Mees Hilgers. The foul seemed blatant but VAR disagreed and the penalty was not confirmed.
Twente, having sweated off the Lazio heat decided to be much more aggressive in the last 15 minutes so Baroni took off Gigot, who had not played for five months, and Dia, putting in Gustav Isaksen and Patric. In the 80th minute the Biancocelesti on the counter attack, Castellanos to Tchaouna who in front of the keeper tried a curling shot which went wide.
Twente pushed forward with the whole team and Lazio just waited for the right moment. It arrived in the 87th minute. Long ball from Pedro over the Twente defence, Dele-Bashiru ran forward and once in the box crossed low for Isaksen who made it 2-0.
Pedro in injury time almost made it three.
Third win in Europa League for the Biancocelesti, who continue to top the table together with Tottenham and Anderlecht.
