The British Connection

Britain is famous for many things. In jumbled order: the Empire and the colonies, the Royal family, pubs, quaint country villages, pop music, Shakespeare and its poets, double decker buses, red phone boxes, fish and chips, tea drinking, Stonehenge, Cornwall, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, the Scottish Highlands, the Gower Coast, the Giant Causeway, its inter-country rivalries and one could on. It is also where modern football, more or less as we know it today, started.

England are the joint oldest national team in football with Scotland having played each other in 1872. At club level the oldest five teams are Notts County (1862), Stoke City (1863), Wrexham (1864), Nottingham Forest (1865) and Sheffield Wednesday (1867).

The four home nation football teams are obviously England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

England are ranked 4th in the world and are the ones who have been the most competitive. They have taken part in 16 World Cups, winning it in 1966 and reaching two semi-finals in 1990 and 2018. The Three Lions have played in 11 European Championships and were runners up in Euro2020 (held in 2021) and 2024. England won the now defunct home nations tournament 54 times (20 shared). Their home ground is Wembley, London.

Scotland are ranked 34th. The Scots have played in 8 World Cups and 4 European Championships but never got past the first round. Scotland won the home nations tournament 24 times (17 shared). The Tartan army play their home games at Hampden Park, Glasgow.

Wales are ranked 29th. The Red Dragons have taken part in 2 World Cups, in 1958 reaching the quarterfinals and then the recent 2022 in Qatar. Wales have played the European Championship twice, in 2016 surprisingly reaching the semi-final and in 2020. The "Dreigiau" won the home nations tournament 12 times (5 shared). Their home ground is the Cardiff City Stadium.

Northern Ireland are ranked 73rd. The Green and White Army have taken part in 3 World Cups, reaching the quarterfinals in 1958, and 1 European Championship in 2016. The Norn Iron won the home nations championship 8 times (5 shared). They play at Windsor Park, Dublin.

The British have done better at club level. English clubs have won:

  • The European Cup/Champions League 15 times (Liverpool 6, Manchester United 3, Chelsea 2, Nottingham Forest 2, Manchester City 1, Aston Villa 1)

  • The UEFA/Europa League 9 times (Liverpool 3, Tottenham 2, Chelsea 2, Manchester United 1, Ipswich Town 1)

  • The old Cup Winners Cup 7 times (Chelsea 2, Arsenal 1, Tottenham 1, West-Ham 1, Manchester United 1, Everton 1)

  • The European Super Cup 9 times (Liverpool 4, Chelsea 2, Manchester United 1, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest 1, Manchester City 1).

Scotland have won the European Championship once (Celtic), the Cup Winners Cup twice (Rangers, Aberdeen) and the European Super Cup once (Aberdeen).

Welsh clubs have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once (Cardiff City) and the quarterfinals twice (Cardiff City, Newport County).

Northern Ireland have failed to have any decent European club results with Linfield, Glenavon, Glentoran, Larne, Cliftonville, Crusaders and others.

The British teams have had some great players who include:

For England; Billy Wright, Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, Stanley Matthews, Jimmy Greaves, Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney to present day Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham

For Scotland: Bill Brown, Billy McNeill, Danny McGrain, Jim Baxter, Alex Young, Ian St. John, Dennis Law, Dave McKay, Billy Bremner, Jimmy Johnstone, Archie Gemmill, Joe Jordan, Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish, Gordon Strachan

In 1912 a former English footballer William Garbutt arrived in Genoa to work in the port. He had played for Woolwich Arsenal and Blacburn Rovers before an injury forced him to retire at 29. By July 1912 he was Genoa's manager and stayed for 15 seasons and won 3 league titles. He then became Italy manager in 1913-14, Roma 1927-29 and Napoli 1929-35. He then spent a season with Athletic Bilbao winning the Liga in 1936. He returned to Italy and joined Milan for 1936-37 before going back to Genoa from 1937-40 and 1946-48.

A curious fact is that he is the reason Italians to this day still call their managers "Mister”, it all started with Mister Garbutt.
