Real Madrid Lazio 1-1 (4-6 on pens)
Lazio win prestigious trophy by beating Real Madrid on penalties
The Biancocelesti had begun their pre-season training at Macolin in Switzerland. Then they moved to La Linea de la Concepcion in Spain to play the prestigious Ciudad de la Línea Trophy. In the first game they beat Cadiz 3-2 thanks to a late goal from Roberto Soldà. Today was the final against the mighty Real Madrid who had beaten Peñarol.
The match
Real Madrid started very well and Lazio were in trouble. The Biancocelesti, unlike Real, had played the day before and suffered physically. However, with few exceptions, the pressure was mainly in the number of corners against Lazio in the first 45 minutes: 8!!! The exceptions were a Gheorghe Hagi shot in the 22nd minute saved without not too many problems by Valerio Fiori, an attempted own goal by Angelo Gregucci in the 33rd minute with a Fiori miracle, and another good save by the Lazio keeper in the 43rd minute when Chendo tried a shot. The Biancocelesti made one dangerous foray into the Madrid half with an Armando Madonna-Ruben Sosa combination which allowed the Uruguayan a shot, well saved by Pedro Jaro.
At the beginning of the second half Lazio almost scored. Sergio Domini tried a header, Sosa miskicked the ball, Riedle got to it but his shot was only just wide. In the 53rd minute Emilio Butragueño all alone in front of Fiori sent the ball wide and five minutes later a Domini free kick was saved by the Madrid keeper.
The match ended goalless so extra time was needed. In the 99th minute Lazio scored. Hugo Sanchez tried a big whack on a free kick but Fiori saved. The Biancoceleste goalkeeper then kicked the ball towards the Real half, the defenders were undecided what to do and hesitated, Sosa passed to Riedle who in front of the keeper deposited the ball in the net.
As if the pressure on the Lazio defence was not already enough, the Blancos then stepped up a gear and gave everything they had to equalise. Fiori was miraculous in the 116th minute on a Sanchez header. In the 120th minute there was one last corner for Real. The Lazio defence cleared and Pedrag Spasic tried a desperate bicycle kick back into the box. The ball managed to reach Sanchez who with a big whack beat Fiori.
Penalties. The first one to shoot was Sosa, goal. Then Sanchez, goal. Claudio Sclosa, goal. Miguel Tendillo, goal. Riedle, goal. Butragueño, saved by Fiori. Raffaele Sergio, goal. Michel, goal. Soldà, GOAL. Lazio Campeon!!!!! Nice to hear that after all these years!!!!
A prestigious win, there is a lot of hope for the season.
