Stadio Tardini, Parma
Parma Lazio 3-1
Lazio, heavily penalised by VAR, lose at Parma
The team
Marco Baroni was forced to do without Nuno Tavares, Matias Vecino and Boulaye Dia, injured, so space for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Luca Pellegrini with Manuel Lazzari at right back.
First half
After two minutes Lazio went ahead. Nicolò Rovella broke a Parma play, Matteo Guendouzi passed to Gustav Isaksen who raced into the Parma half, once close to the box he passed back to Rovella who with a marvellous curling shot beat Zion Suzuki. A great goal, but Var intervened. Rovella had slightly touched Anas Haj who collapsed to the ground before the Lazio play started. The referee decided it was a foul so no goal. A very controversial decision since Var should not really have intervened since Parma had retrieved the ball and by Var rules once another play has started it cannot intervene. The foul was almost non-existent anyway. But Lazio do not seem to be fortunate with the Var this season.
Lazio were under shock and Parma went ahead. In the 6th minute there was a bad pass from Ivan Provedel to Rovella, the blond midfielder tried to give the ball to Alessio Romagnoli but it was too short, in came Dennis Man who alone in front of Provedel did not miss.
The Biancocelesti tried to get back into the game but psychologically it was not easy. In the 28th minute Isasken crossed in the box, Taty Castellanos headed the ball past Suzuki but Botond Balogh saved on line. In the 42nd minute Mattia Zaccagni on the left, ball to Pellegrini who crossed, Isaksen on the right tried a volley but Emanuele Valeri saved on the line yet again. In the second minute of injury time, Pellegrini tried a low cross in the box, Dele-Bashiru was anticipated and as Zaccagni was about to shoot, he was fouled from behind by Mandela Keita. The referee gave Lazio the penalty but Var decided that there was no foul, hence no penalty. It did not look as if there was much in it but Zaccagni must have felt something otherwise he would not have collapsed to the ground. He was in a very favourable position.
Second half
Two substitutions for Parma in the interval. Out went Ange-Yoan Bonny and Keita, in came Gabriel Charpentier and Nahuel Estévez. Shortly after the restart Pedro came on for Dele-Bashiru.
In the 52nd minute Zaccagni took a corner, Romagnoli tried a header, Suzuki parried. A minute later Parma made it two. Mario Gila lost the ball in Lazio’s half, Charpentier advanced and passed to Haj just outside the box on the left, splendid curled shot, Provedel was too far forward, 2-0 for Parma.
In the 65th minute Loum Tchaouna substituted Isaksen, later Drissa Camara and Antoine Hainaut took the places of Haj and Giovanni Leoni.
In the 72nd minute Guendouzi to Pedro on the left, ball to Tchaouna in the box, shot, Suzuki parried. In the 76th, free kick for Lazio. Long ball in the penalty area from Pellegrini to Castellanos who acrobatically crossed into the middle, Tchaouna tried a volley and again Suzuki parried. Another Romagnoli header went out shortly after.
The Biancocelesti were trying very hard to re-open the game and in the 80th minute finally got their reward. Pellegrini tried a shot from way out, it hit a defender and then Castellanos, arriving comfortably to Valeri who chested the ball back to the keeper. But there was a misunderstanding with Suzuki and it trickled away from them. Enter Taty, Parma 2 Lazio 1.
All hands on deck now for the Biancocelesti crew. Out went Rovella and in came Tijani Noslin. Earlier Adam Marusic had come on for Lazzari and Adrian Benedyczak for former Lazio Matteo Cancellieri.
With all of Lazio on the limit of the Parma penalty area all that was needed was for the Biancocelesti to lose the ball and the Gialloblu would have had an empty freeway to Provedel. And this is exactly what happened. Enrico Delprato anticipated Noslin, one-two with Charpentier, and off he went. Nothing Provedel could do. Game over.
An unfortunate game for Lazio, once again penalised by Var. Well, Gabriele Gravina did announce during the week that he was putting forward his candidature for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation, the message to Claudio Lotito arrived loud and clear.
