The season so far

The previous season had been disappointing and Lazio arrived only 10th so, for the 1947-48 season, fans hoped for a better year. Toni Cargnelli was confirmed manager and the most important new arrivals were Flavio Cecconi from Venezia and Sergio Piacentini from Sampdoria plus Brazilian Orlando Fantoni. Leaving the capital were Luigi Cassano and Henglebert Koenig to Sampdoria, Bruno Ispiro and Antonio Sessa to Triestina, plus Edoardo Valenti to Perugia. In the autumn transfer window, Leandro Remondini from Modena and Romano Penzo were added.

The Biancocelesti so far had not been doing very well and were just one point above the relegation zone. The only positive things had been beating Inter at home and drawing away with Juventus. They had lost the derby.

The match: Sunday, September 28, 1947, Stadio Nazionale, Rome

One cannot really say it was a good match. Lazio were missing some vital players, Salvador Gualtieri, Aldo Puccinelli and Orlando Fantoni IV, which may be a decent excuse. Atalanta could have scored early but in the 4th minute Julius Korostelev missed a sitter. In the 11th however, the Bergamaschi scored. Long pass from Paolo Todeschini for Korostelev who tried a shot, Uber Gradella parried but the ball landed at the feet of Sergio Scudeler who had no problem in scoring.

The Biancocelesti managed to equalise with Alessandro Ferri in the 22nd minute. A powerful header off a Salustiano Vidal corner.

Lazio attacked but were innocuous for the rest of the first half and basically for the rest of the game. They certainly put Atalanta under siege in their own penalty area, but nobody had the courage to take the initiative. Just a lot of passing of the ball. Things did improve slightly in the second 45 minutes when the Biancocelesti sped up their maneuver but were still harmless, frustrated by the inability of the strikers to score.

A messy, confused match, poorly played by both teams.

What happened next

At home Lazio were a force to be reckoned with, but away from home their performances were pretty dismal. After the first half of the season Lazio were 13th with 17 points, just two points off the relegation zone. Cargnelli was sacked and replaced with Orlando Tognotti.

The new manager was able to improve things. Lazio continued to be disappointing away from home, just one game won … against Roma, but at home they beat Inter and Bologna plus a great 5-0 win against Fiorentina. Lazio finished 10th with 39 points. One could not really ask for more especially since with 12 away losses out of 20 there was not much room to earn more points.

Romolo Alzani was the player with most appearances (38), Romano Penzo scored the most goals (17).

Let’s talk about Franco Rosi

Source Lazio Wiki

Franco Rosi was born on September 27 1927 in Genzano di Roma. He grew up in the Lazio youth sector with whom he won a Roman Ragazzi League in 1944. Rosi debuted in the first eleven during the Roman War League and was then loaned to Avezzano in Serie C for the 1945-46 season. Back in Rome in 1946 he made just one appearance and in the next season played 8 games. He was loaned to Fano in 1948 where he made 22 league appearances with one goal before being sold to Stabia in 1949. He played three seasons in Campania and then moved to Lecce in 1952. After a year he went to L’Aquila where he played for four seasons with 102 league appearances and 13 goals all in the fourth tier. His last five years of football were played in the minor leagues.

Once he stopped playing, he became head coach of minor Lazio regional teams and was sporting director for Ostiense. He was also editor in chief of the weekly "Record" and president of Polisportiva Nuova Ostia.

Rosi was a good midfielder, powerful with good technique, perhaps a bit slow. He is remembered for a funny episode. In Lazio vs Torino on January 4 1948, in the second half, one of his shots was miraculously saved by Granata keeper Valerio Bacigalupo. At the end of the match, he went to thank the keeper for his save. There was a general surprise, but he explained that if he had scored, the Great Torino would have started playing as they usually did and certainly won the game!!!

He died on February 17 2019.
