Great Lazio beats Juventus Audax
A goal in each half and a strong defence showed the superiority of Lazio over the other Rome based team Juventus Audax.

The season so far
The Italian 1919-1920 championship was divided into two main groups: north and centre-south. The North was subsequently divided into a further 8 groups and the centre-south into three. It was basically local teams battling it out amongst each other. The first two teams were then divided into a further two groups for the inter-regional semi-finals, with the winners of the groups clashing in an interregional final. The two inter-regional winners then met for the Championship final.
Lazio was obviously in the Rome group and played with another 6 Rome based teams. There was no money and Lazio could do little as far as reinforcements were concerned.
In the first match of the season Lazio drew away against Pro Roma. The game with Juventus Audax was the second.
The match: Sunday, November 30, Rome, Stadio della Rondinella
Lazio way too superior for Juventus Audax. The chronicles of the day indicate that the variety of Lazio’s game was far too much for the other Rome-based team. In the 18th minute Giuseppe Fioranti took a fierce shot on goal, the goalkeeper did what he could but Marcello Consiglio then volleyed it in. Juventus Audax attempted some attacks but Lazio’s defence was far too strong.
In the second half some of the players changed role (no substitutions were possible at that time) and Lazio improved both defensively and in attack. There was a free kick at the 72nd minute and Carlo Maranghi made it 2-0.

What happened next
Lazio played quite well but, in the end, finished third in the mini group made up of Rome based teams. Despite winning most of the matches against the teams that eventually came behind, Lazio only took one point in the four games against Fortitudo and Audace who took the first two places in the group and proceeded to the semi-final stage.
Let’s talk about: Marcello Consiglio
Marcello Consiglio was born in Rome in 1894 and began playing for Lazio’s reserves in 1910. A year later he was ready for the first team and started playing regularly as a centre forward. He was part of the team that made it to the national finals in 1913 against Pro Vercelli and again in 1914 against Casale.
He had to interrupt his footballing activity in 1915 because he was called up by the army. He participated in the First World War but came back to Lazio when it was all over. With the Biancocelesti he won many post-war tournaments, but at the end of the 1920-21 season he gave up playing, deciding to take up a managerial position in Lazio.
He died of peritonitis in 1932.
He was a good centre forward despite not being particularly tall. He was powerful, skilful and fast. He played 76 games for Lazio scoring 56 goals.
