Massimo Mutarelli was born in Como on January 13, 1978.
He started his career in the youth sector of Atalanta and debuted in Serie A on April 28, 1996 in the home game against Lazio lost 3-1. In January 1997 he signed for Genoa. He stayed four and a half years in Liguria, all in Serie B, appearing in a total of 158 games with 11 goals.
In 2002 he moved south and joined Palermo in Serie A. He played there for four years, the first two in Serie B. In his third year Palermo did so well that they qualified for the UEFA Cup reaching the round of 16. They were eventually knocked out by Schalke 04. He proved to be a solid midfielder and attracted the attention of the Biancocelesti.
In 2006 he signed for Lazio. He was an important player for manager Delio Rossi giving equilibrium in a midfield made up of Valon Behrami, Cristian Ledesma, Gaby Mudingayi and Stefano Mauri. He scored his first goal in a derby so it was extra special. In his first year Lazio qualified for the Champions League and he made a great contribution.
After two years he fell out with Rossi and was put out of the team. He took the club to court, won, and in January 2009 joined Bologna as a free agent. In the following season he suffered a bad injury which took him out of football for seven months. At the end of his contract in 2011 he became jobless and had to wait until March 2012 to find another team. He went back to Atalanta but made just one appearance. He retired at the end of the 2011-12 season.
Once he stopped active football he went into management and was coach of the Empoli youth teams from 2014 to 2016. He then became assistant to Gigi Di Biagio Italy’s Under-21 from 2017 to 2019. When Di Biagio became head coach of Italy for a brief period before the arrival of Roberto Mancini, he continued to be his assistant and also followed him to Spal in 2020.
Mutarelli was a very consistent player and is well remembered by the Lazio fans. He played 63 games for the Biancocelesti (48 in Serie A, 8 in Coppa Italia and 7 in Champions League) scoring 5 goals (4 in Serie A and one in Champions League).
