Lazio Varese 3-1
Lazio win their first Serie A game of 1964-65 thanks to Mari, Governato and Renna.
The season had opened with the first round of the Coppa Italia in early September and Lazio had won at Trani 3-0. In the second round later on in the month they faced Napoli. The match ended 0-0 and was also goalless after extra time. In those days there was no penalty shootout but a flip of the coin and the Biancocelesti lost the toss.
In Campionato Lazio had drawn two and lost three. Not a good start. A win against Varese would be very welcome.
The match
Varese’s first shot was a goal. In the 6th minute Piero Cucchi crossed, the ball went over Kurt Christiansen and arrived to Kurt Andersson who shot, Idilio Cei tried to save it but it was 1-0 for Varese. Big shock for the Biancocelesti and match already uphill. Christiansen missed the ball and the opportunity to equalise in the 13th minute and then a couple of attempts by Antonio Renna were saved easily by Antonio Lonardi. In the 30th minute Eugenio Fascetti took a corner that hit the post. The ball then accidentally bounced off Carlo Soldo, crossbar!!! In the 35th minute Giampaolo Piaceri first shot against the goalkeeper and then was unable to score with the tap in. The first half ended with a dejected Lazio.
Different story in the second. In the 56th minute Christiansen to Nello Governato and ball to Alberto Mari. Big whack, 1-1.
Three minutes later Lazio went ahead. Governato to Piaceri who saw Renna on the wing. Cross inside the box and Governato made it 2-1 for the Biancocelesti.
Lazio tried to control the game but six minutes from time a Vincenzo Traspedini header looked like Varese had equalised. But Cei with a brilliant save managed to keep Lazio’s vital one goal lead. Which became two a few minutes later. A Piaceri header was saved by Lonardi but the ball got to Renna. Clinical shot, Lazio 3 Varese 1.
Finally at the sixth attempt the Biancocelesti managed to win.
