Game 14, Serie A
Tuesday November 27, 2012
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Lazio Udinese 3-0
Lazio strolled to a 3-0 midweek win against Udinese despite an early missed penalty
The game was an unusual Tuesday evening kick-off and played in front of a 20,000 crowd. It was pretty much a one- sided affair at least up until the 2-0 mark. A handball by Willians after only 10 minutes could have given the home side an early lead but Cristian Ledesma was hypnotized by Udinese keeper Zeljko Brkic, who dived low to save the spot kick. A few minutes later Udinese had one of their only chances, but it was a colossal one, with Di Natale hitting the crossbar with a freekick.
At that point Lazio took control and after 17 minutes an excellent Stefano Mauri-Ledesma move was finished off neatly by “El tata” Alvaro Gonzalez. Lazio continued to attack and on the half hour mark Miroslav Klose doubled the score with a well-timed run and finish with only the keeper to beat.
The second half saw Udinese try to be a bit more positive but the contest was practically over when, with 59 minutes gone, Hernanes curled a free kick round the wall to make it 3-0. With 30 minutes remaining Lazio basically slowed the game down and ran down the clock with Udinese incapable of any reaction.
On an evening where Lazio wore shirts saying no to racism, it was also a positive night from a strictly sporting point of view with a convincing and relatively straightforward 3 points. A small but sweet revenge against Udinese who two seasons earlier had pipped Lazio to a Champions League place on goal difference.
