Stadio Flaminio, Rome
Lazio Torino 1-0
A Mari goal in the first half was enough to beat Torino
At the end of the first half of the season Lazio were 12th, three points clear of the relegation zone. They had won the away derby with a Vito D’Amato goal. The game in Milan prior to today’s match had been suspended due to fog.
The match
A return to the Stadio Flaminio for the Biancocelesti against a team that was in a good state of form. However, it was Lazio who opened the score early in the match In the 18th minute, the Granata managed to wall a Giampiero Vitali free kick. The Biancoceleste player immediately crossed into the box, the ball reached Alberto Mari who with a powerful shot beat Lido Vieri.
Five minutes later Torino hit the woodwork with a Luigi Meroni shot. Lazio reorganised and towards the end of the first half first Mari and then Nello Governato went close to doubling the Biancoceleste score.
In the second half, Torino had a good chance with a Meroni header and Bruno Bolchi in the 69th minute almost surprised Idilio Cei. But this was the Granata’s last attempt and Lazio several times went close to scoring their second. Paolo Carosi was fouled in the box but the referee was looking the other way. Mari again went close to his brace and in the 82nd minute Vitali missed a good opportunity. Four minutes later Nicola Ciccolo hit the crossbar with a header off a D’Amato cross and a few minutes later missed another easy chance.
A good win for Lazio who were now tenth with a game in hand.
