Game 32, Serie A
Friday, April 12, 2024
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Lazio Salernitana 4-1
Lazio demolish Salernitana in a surreal environment with fans booing despite the victory
The team
Igor Tudor had to deal with the absences of Ciro Immobile, Alessio Romagnoli, Matteo Guendouzi, Ivan Provedel and Mattia Zaccagni. A big burden. He decided to put Manuel Lazzari on the left wing, a role he has never played in before, with Felipe Anderson plus Luis Alberto in attack to help Taty Castellanos.
First half
Lazio started the game well and in the 6th minute Mario Gila was very dangerous on a corner where a fluky deflection by Domagoj Bradaric avoided a goal. But in the seventh minute the Biancocelesti scored. Felipe Anderson dispossessed Antonio Candreva on the right and advanced. Castellanos opened a gap in the Salernitana defence, Felipetto went in and with a left footer beat Benoit Costil.
The Biancocelesti continued to press and attack the visitors who went into great difficulty. In the 14th minute, Luis Alberto took a corner, Castellanos got a header which was handballed by Norbert Gyomber. The referee was about to point to the penalty spot but waited because Matias Vecino got hold of the ball, turned and scored Lazio’s second of the evening.
Game over? No. In the 16th minute Bradaric on the created havoc on the left wing, ball to Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi who passed to Giulio Maggiore. Perfect cross to the middle, Loum Tchaouna, between Gila and Lazzari, headed past Christos Mandas to reopen the game.
Lazio went into a panic, as usual, and Salernitana almost scored when Mandas was unable to block a Bradaric shot and GIla had to anticipate Tchaouna to avoid further problems. Slowly the Biancocelesti got their game together and in the 35th minute put the match to bed. A Luis Alberto-Castellanos one-two at the edge of the box, ball to Felipe Anderson, 3-1 for Lazio.
Adam Marusic had a chance in injury time but his shot was too high despite the favourable position.
Second half
In the 51st minute, Daichi Kamada-Luis Alberto one-two, ball to Felipe Anderson just inside the box but his shot went too high. In the 60th minute another Luis Alberto-Felipe Anderson combination gave the Spaniard a great chance but it was saved by the goalkeeper.
The game had nothing left to say but Lazio did try to get their fourth of the evening and did so in the 87th minute. Nicolò Rovella dispossessed Lassana Coulibaly, ball to Gustav Isaksen who with a powerful right footer scored his third goal of the season.
Good game for Lazio, but Salernitana were pretty poor.
