Game 11, Serie A
Monday, November 4, 2024
Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Lazio Cagliari 2-1
Lazio complicate things for themselves, but in the end manage to beat Cagliari with a Zaccagni penalty
The team
With Nuno Tavares suspended, Patric injured and Mattia Zaccagni still not 100%, manager Marco Barone decided to play with Luca Pellegrini as left back, Alessio Romagnoli in defence and Tijani Noslin on the left wing.
An important game. By winning, the Biancocelesti could be just three points away from leaders Napoli.
First half
Third minute. Pellegrini took a free kick, ball over the wall but it bounced right in front of Simone Scuffet who could not catch it, Boulaye Dia went for the kill and Lazio were already ahead.
Too early.
The goal practically put a wet blanket on the game and the Biancocelesti decided to control the match without exerting themselves too much. So the game became boring. Spectators were woken up only in the 18th minute when Taty Castellanos tried a shot from outside the box and hit the woodwork.
Cagliari, forced into action by Lazio’s inaction, did not do very much until the 41st minute when Antoine Makumbu passed to Zito Luvumbo, back to the goal and pressed by Manuel Lazzari. He turned around and tried a shot, deflection off Mario Gila, Ivan Provedel was caught unawares and the ball slowly trickled in. Lazio 1 Cagliari 1. All in all, expected.
Second half
In the interval Matias Vecino substituted Noslin to give more depth to the Biancoceleste midfield.
Lazio much more determined in the second half, started to attack more consistently. In the 58th minute Lazzari crossed from the right, Castellanos headed the ball towards the goal, Sebastiano Luperto saved on the line, Vecino tried again but yet again Luperto managed to deflect the ball into corner.
Baroni made another change: out went Gustav Isaksen and in came Pedro. Shortly after Nicolas Viola and Adam Obert substituted Gianluca Gaetano and Tommaso Augello for Calgiari and Zaccagni came on for Matteo Guendouzi.
In the 74th minute another Lazzari crossed from the right, ball cleared towards Nadir Zortea who did not notice Pellegrini coming up behind him. The Lazio left back anticipated the Islander and was fouled. Penalty and Mattia Zaccagni gave the Biancocelesti the deserved lead.
After Cagliari had replaced Zortea with Mattia Felici came a double sending off. First Yerry Mina stopped Castellanos with a foul and was booked for a second time, then Michel Adopo applauded the ref and got a second yellow card. Cagliari down to nine men.
Lazio had a couple of chances to make it three, first with Nicolò Rovella in the 83rd with a curling shot not too far off the post, then in injury time with Pedro. Castellanos went off on the counter attack and once inside the box on the left tried a shot which Scuffet managed to parry. In came Pedro who had a clear chance but his shot went over the crossbar. In the last seconds of the game Cagliari had a corner which Provedel managed to clear to avoid any danger.
Ugly win for Lazio, but they are only three points away from the top.
