Juventus Lazio 3-0

Lazio dominate possession but make a number of individual errors allowing Juventus to win comfortably

The teams

Maurizio Sarri for the last game of 2022 has to leave Ciro Immobile, Mattia Zaccagni, Manuel Lazzari and Patric in Rome. Lazio, as seen in the last couple of games, were also running on empty. Compared to the Thursday night game against Monza in come Luka Romero, Toma Basic, Elseid Hysaj and Danilo Cataldi. The Biancocelesti are physically and mentally fatigued. Juventus on the other hand have important players ready to return from injury and have renewed enthusiasm following an appalling start to the season.

The match

Juventus begin much better than Lazio and in the 6th minute Moise Kean has a chance but his shot is just wide. Five minutes later, great pass from Nicolò Fagioli to Filip Kostic on the left. Once in the box, ball back to Fagioli, unmarked, central, at the edge of the box, Ivan Provedel saves.

From this point Lazio take control of the game. Lots of passes, attempts to find the gap in the Juve defence. To no avail. The Biancocelesti are never dangerous despite having 61% possession. This is a similar script to the recent two games against Monza and the Derby.

The Bianconeri are just waiting for Lazio’s mistake. Which comes in the 41st minute. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic loses the ball in the Juventus half. Adrien Rabiot lifts it over the Lazio defence and off goes Kean. Provedel comes way too far out and the Italian forward’s lob, from a tricky position, gives Juventus the lead.

Second half

In the 49th minute, Kostic on the left to Arkadiusz Milik free as a bird, but his shot is saved by Provedel on the front post.

In the 54th minute Milik steals the ball from Cataldi, Manuel Locatelli to Kostic again who shoots, Provedel saves but Kean has a comfortable tap in for the 2-0.

At the point Sarri changes a few pieces. In come Luis Alberto and Matias Vecino for Cataldi and Basic.

In the 61st minute Lazio have their first shot at goal. On the right, Hysaj to Milinkovic-Savic to Pedro who manages to reach Luis Alberto in the centre of the box. His shot is weak and saved comfortably by Wojciech Szcesny.

In the 63rd minute Angel Di Maria replaces Juve's hero of the day Kean and a minute later Pedro has a chance for Lazio on the left. After going into the box past a couple of defenders he cannot put any power in his shot which is saved by the Juve keeper.

Nothing much of interest happens from then on and the only thing worth noting are the substitutions. Between the 65th and 85th minute in come Enrico Chiesa and Leandro Paredes for Kostic and Locatelli for Juventus while Lazio replace Hysaj, Romero and Milinkovic-Savic with Gila, Matteo Cancellieri and Marcos Antonio.

In the 89th minute, Di Maria to Chiesa on the left, cross into the middle of the box, Alessio Romagnoli goes the wrong way and Milik makes it three for Juventus.

Lazio have a belated reaction. In the second minute of overtime Vecino’s shot from just outside the box is tipped over the crossbar by Szcesny. A minute later Felipe Anderson’s shot from outside the penalty box is well saved again by the Juve goalkeeper.

Juve win comfortably. Lazio played well but were sterile in attack and made some huge individual mistakes that cost them three goals and the match.

The Biancocelesti really need to recharge their batteries. They have 50 days to do so.
