The team

Igor Tudor was forced to do without Alessio Romagnoli, suspended, hence Nicolò Casale was placed in the centre of defence. Furthermore, the Croatian manager decided to bench Luis Alberto, Felipe Anderson, Ciro Immobile and Matteo Guendouzi, giving more muscle to midfield. Ivan Provedel finally managed to get back into the starting eleven after two months out due to injury.

First half

Inter started well. In the 3rd minute Lautaro Martinez gave a splendid assist for Marcus Thuram but the Frenchman missed the ideal moment for the shot and when he eventually tried to shoot Provedel, very close, managed to parry. A minute later Taty Castellanos scored but he was in offside.

From this point Lazio took control of the game. Inter, in holiday mode, did not really do much even though Simone Inzaghi, unlike recent games, played his best 11. In the 14th minute Daichi Kamada took advantage of a Francesco Acerbi mistake  and passed to Castellanos, immediate shot, Yann Sommer saved. In the 28th minute Federico Di Marco tried from outside the box centre-left but Provedel parried into corner. He tried again a minute later but the Lazio goalkeeper made another excellent save.

In the 32nd minute, Nicolò Rovella to Kamada who with a left footer from outside the box surprised Sommer and gave Lazio the lead. Three minutes later the Japanese dribbled past a few players and gave an interesting ball to Mattia Zaccagni who tried a shot but it went wide. Benjamin Pavard, in an attempt to stop Zaccagni fouled the forward after the shot but Lazio are not Roma so no penalty was given.

Second half

Lazio pulled back a bit in the second half and left the initiative to the Nerazzurri. In the 58th minute Nicolò Barella headed the ball towards the goal following a Matteo Darmian cross, Provedel saved into corner. On the subsequent corner, Lautaro headed the ball onto the post.

First load of substitutions a minute later: in came Davide Frattesi, Carlos Augusto and Denzel Dumfries, out went Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alessandro Bastoni and Darmian. Tudor sent in Guendouzi and Elseid Hysaj for Luca Pellegrini and Rovella. Later on in the match Zaccagni, Kamada and Mario Gila were substituted by Luis Alberto, Felipe Anderson and Danilo Cataldi, Tajon Buchanan came on for Di Marco.

In the 84th minute, Cataldi to Castellanos on the counter attack, El Taty ran forward all alone but once close to the box he was stopped by Pavard, probably with a foul, but VAR was on holiday.

In the 88th minute, free kick on the right wing for Inter. Cross into the box, Dumfries jumped to head the ball, Adam Marusic did not, 1-1.

Disappointing end and goodbye to any Champions League hopes. Lazio will now need a point in the next game against Sassuolo to secure Europa League for next season.
