Game 12, Serie B
Sunday, November 30, 1980
Stadio Luigi Ferraris
Genoa Lazio 0-0
Lazio come back with a point on difficult pitch
Lazio started 1980-81 with the Coppa Italia. In the group stage they were paired with Pescara, Varese, Verona and Ascoli. They won all of the games with the exception of a draw with Ascoli, hence winning their group.
The impact in Serie B had also been positive and after eleven games they were leading the pack together with Milan, with a four-point advantage over third place. They had yet to lose, having won 6 and drawn 5.
The match
As mentioned earlier Lazio had never lost so far but Genoa had always won at home so on paper the game should have been a spectacular one. It wasn’t.
The Biancocelesti did very little to win the game, more worried to avoid opening up gaps for Genoa. In the 16th minute Giorgio Mastropasqua flew down towards the box, ball to Stefano Chiodi but his shot was well wide. The Rossoblu towards the end of the first half had a chance when Maurizio Moscatelli missed a cross by Enrico Todesco, but Carlo Perrone cleared.
In the second half, following a one-two between Roberto Russo and Todesco, Bruno Caneo had a chance but from a very difficult position and his attempt went wide. In the 65th minute Torino legend Claudio Sala came in for Caneo and gave two splendid assists for Russo and Todesco but both chances were squandered. A final Sala attempt in the 87th minute was cleared by Arcadio Spinozzi with Moscatelli in no-man’s land.
A good point for Lazio on a difficult pitch.
