Egidio Fumagalli was born in Monza on April 21, 1937.
He first played in the Doria Monza youth set up and then joined the Milan academy in 1954-55. In 1956 he joined Novese (Novi Ligure) first on loan and then definitely. He stayed two seasons in Serie D with 6th and 7th places.
In 1958 he joined Lazio. He arrived in time to win the Coppa Italia, playing 7 games and scoring 2 goals (Marzotto Valdagno, Juventus). The manager was Fulvio Bernardini and it was Lazio's first ever silverware.
In the 1958-59 season Lazio finished 11th. Fumagalli played 17 league games and scored 2 goals (Bari, Bologna). Lazio's best result was beating Juventus 1-0 at home.
In 1959-60 Lazio finished 12th, still under Bernardini. Fumagalli played 15 league games and 4 in Coppa Italia.
The 1960-61 season was his last with Lazio. Bernardini was replaced after ten matches by Enrique Flamini and after fifteen Jesse Carver arrived as technical director. Lazio finished 18th and were relegated. Their few decent results were winning the second derby 2-1 and beating Napoli 5-2 away. Lazio again reached the Coppa Italia final but lost 0-2 to Fiorentina, in Florence. Fumagalli played 15 league games with 2 goals (Catania, Napoli).
In 1961-62 he played for Novara in Serie B. He played one season, under managers Carlo Facchini (future Lazio briefly in 1962), Evaristo Barrera (former Lazio player 1939-40) and finally Imre Senkey. The Azzurri finished 14th but then ended up relegated for corruption charges. Fumagalli played 21 league games with 3 goals (Catanzaro, Lucchese x2) and 4 in Coppa Italia with 3 goals (Udinese, Inter, SPAL). His teammates included Lazio connections Carlo Soldo (1967-69), Giambattista Moschino (1962-63, 1971-73) and Clemente Mattei (1956-58, 1959-61).
In 1962-63 he joined Salernitana in Serie C. The Granata finished 4th, under Piero Pasinati until early December and then Ulisse Giunchi. Fumagalli played 10 league games. One of his teammates was again former Lazio, Clemente Mattei plus a young Francesco "Ciccio" Cordova (Lazio 1976-79).
In November 1963 Fumagalli returned to Lazio in Serie A. The Biancocelesti had a decent season under Juan Carlos Lorenzo and finished 8th. Fumagalli however made no appearances.
In the summer of 1964, he joined Frosinone in Serie D. He stayed four seasons in Ciociaria with 5th, 1st (promotion to C), 18th (relegation to D) and 2nd places. His managers were Adriano and Umberto De Angelis the first year, De Angelis the second, De Angelis and Amedeo Amadei the third and in the fourth former Lazio player, Zeffiro Furiassi (1949-55) and then Ivano Corghi. In his four years with the "Leoni", Fumagalli played 148 league games.
He then spent one final season with Sessana (Sessa Aurunca-Caserta) in Serie D in 1969-70, finishing 8th.
At 33 he retired.
Fumagalli was a midfielder. He was 1.80 and 70 kilos and could play in all the midfield roles. He played 47 games in Serie A with 4 goals and 21 in B with 3 goals.
His peak was at Lazio where he played three seasons. He made a total of 58 appearances with 6 goals. He won a Coppa Italia with Lazio, scoring two goals on the way to the final and then playing in the triumph against Fiorentina.
He also has a claim to fame in the record books as the first ever Lazio player to come on as a substitute, in the 3-2 cup win over Roma on June 21, 1958.
Egidio Fumagalli died in Frosinone on January 9, 2015.
