Defences prevail

A draw was a natural consequence since neither team wanted to risk anything

The season so far

In the previous season the teams from Serie A and B had been grouped together and divided into two groups according to geographical location. This was in order to lessen the burden of travel in a devastated country following the end of World War II. Lazio finished seventh. A mediocre season for the Biancocelesti with a terrible first half and a better second.

The manager, Toni Cargnelli had been confirmed and there had been some new entries as far as players were concerned. Defenders Luigi Cassano (Alessandria), Emilio Carton (Verona), midfielders Antonio Sessa (Pro Gorizia) and Luciano Ramella (Como) and forwards Mario Magrini (Pro Gorizia), Bruno Ispiro (Genoa) and Cesare Ferronato (Bassano). There was a lot of optimism, and Lazio were considered a possible outsider.

So far Lazio were struggling. They were 15th just one point above the relegation zone. They had managed to win four games but had lost 7, including the derby.

The match: Sunday, December 22, 1946, Stadio Nazionale, Rome

The game played just before Christmas was very slow and the defences prevailed. Lazio however played better and in the 4th minute went ahead. Henglebert Koenig was quick to shoot into the net after a massive scrum in the Milan box.

The Rossoneri did very little to score but managed to equalise in the 37th minute. A Mario Tosolini-Riccardo Carpellese one-two, the entire Lazio defence was caught unawares and Carlo Annovazzi powered a shot that beat Corrado Giubilo.

In the second half the teams canceled each other out and absolutely nothing worth mentioning happened

A boring match, the teams were too worried to lose to be able to create anything dangerous.

What happened next

At the end of the first half of the season Lazio were tenth with a five-point cushion on the relegation zone and miles away from the top. Very inconsistent, the Biancocelesti had some good wins (Bologna 3-1, Sampdoria 4-0) but bad losses (4-1 against Fiorentina and 5-1 to Torino). After 25 games they were in the relegation zone, but thanks to Enrique Flamini's return they managed to work themselves up and reach tenth place at the end of the season. In the last 13 matches they lost just one and won five.

Aldo Puccinelli was the player with most appearances (36) as well as the top scorer with 13 goals.

Let's talk about Emilio Carton

Emilio Carton was born in Verona on March 1, 1923. He started playing with in the youth teams of Verona and debuted in the first eleven in the 1941-42 season in Serie C. In 1945 he signed for Lazio. In his first year he made 17 appearances in the National Serie A-B Centre South League. After World War II due to the difficulty in travelling in Italy, the Federation decided to split the League into two groups, one for the North and one for the Centre-South. He stayed another two seasons, but rarely played, making just 11 appearances. In 1948-49 he signed for Avellino and stayed a year before joining Marzotto Valdagno in 1949-50. His last years of active football were played for Latina from 1950 to 1952. In the 1960’s he coached the youth team of Audace San Michele Extra.

In 1953 he even ventured into acting, appearing as himself in the film Gli Eroi della Domenica (the Sunday Heroes) directed by Mario Camerini.

In total he made 28 appearances for the Biancocelesti.
