Piola turns on the light
A fantastic goal by Piola gives Lazio the win
Also on this day:
The season so far
The previous season Lazio had arrived eighth under manager Jozef Violak playing well against stronger teams but dropping points with the weaker ones. For the 1938-39 season Violak (or Viola as he was known in fascist Italy) was forced to insert a number of youth players into the squad such as Corrado Giubilo, Renato Ferrarese, Alessandro Ferri, Armando Palma, Luigi Vettraino, Alessandro Capponi, Armando Longhi and Giuseppe Mancini, because the club had no money. Only Luciano Ramella and Luigi Allemandi arrived whereas leaving were Archimede Nardi (Inter), Luigi Stobbe (Pisa), Benedetto Stella (Fiorentina), Giuseppe Viani (Livorno) and Anfilogino Guarisi (Corinthians). It was not going to be easy to avoid relegation.
So far though Lazio had not done too badly. They were 6th on 10 points, four points clear of the relegation zone.
The match: Sunday, December 18, 1938, Stadio PNF, Rome
It was cold and rainy but at least the pitch was in decent shape.
Lazio played the majority of the first half in attack but created very little, just lots of corners. Triestina did very little but what they did was dangerous. Two very quick counter attacks in the 11th and 13th minutes allowed Gino Colaussi to shoot, the first went wide and the second was parried by Giacomo Blason into corner. In the 18th minute Silvio Piola to Emilio Capri, cross into the box, Umberto Busani tried a header, ball to Giovanni Riccardi who from a favourable position shot wide. The rest of the half was rather boring with the Biancocelesti unable to put three passes together. In the 37th minute Bruno Camolese tried a shot which shaved the post. Then out of the blue, in the 44th minute Silvio Piola’s masterpiece. He got the ball at midfield, dribbled past four or five Triestina players, avoided an attempted rugby tackle, another attempt at ending his career prematurely, reached the edge of the box and with a powerful left footed shot gave Lazio the lead.
In the second half Triestina decided to make it even more difficult for themselves and in the 47th minute Ruggero Salar was sent off for a dirty foul on Capri. In the 58th, Blason was great in anticipating Colaussi after a free kick was lobbed over the wall. The Alabardato forward had a chance in the 61st minute after he dribbled past Benedicto Zacconi and Massimiliano Faotto but his shot went wide. Giuseppe Grezar had another chance in the 79th minute, saved by Blason. Busani shot wide in the 85th minute before Triestina had a chance to equalise in the 87th with Colaussi but again Blason parried.
A good win, despite not playing particularly well.

What happened next
After the end of the first half of the season they were fifth together with Genova and had won the “away” derby. After four games of the second round of fixtures, the club gave Violak permission to leave and coach Milano. The new manager was Luigi Allemandi, who hence became player-manager, with Alfredo Di Franco.
At the end of the season Lazio arrived 10th, a comfortable four points above the relegation zone. Perhaps a little more had been expected, but worse was also feared. Silvio Piola was top scorer with only 9 goals, but he had suffered several injuries. Alfredo Monza topped the appearances with 32 games.
Let's talk about Guglielmo Trevisan
Guglielmo Trevisan was born in Trieste on January 31, 1918. He started playing for Triestina as a forward debuting in Serie A on March 31 1935. He was then loaned to Ponziana, a Trieste based club, in Serie C for two years before going back to the Alabardati in 1937. He stayed for four seasons with 116 league appearances and 40 goals. During this time, he was tried out by Lazio twice in two training games: on October 13 1938 and June 14 1940. However, he was not signed. In 1941 he moved to Genoa. In his second year he scored 20 goals, so far an unsurpassed goal record in one single season for the club. During the war he played for San Giusto, only to return to Genoa in 1945. Back in Trieste in 1947, he contributed seven goals in 33 games to take his team to second place behind the Great Torino.
In 1950 he finally managed to play a game for Lazio. He was loaned to the Biancocelesti for the Latin Cup of 1950 and he played the semi-final against Benfica which Lazio lost 3-0. In 1950 he became player-manager for Legnano for two seasons then did the same for Piacenza in 1952-53.
Triestina in the meantime were in a spot of financial bother so he went back in 1953 to give a hand. His last year of active football was with Ortona in 1954, again as player-manager.
Trevisan played two games for Italy in 1940 vs Germany and Hungary. Against the latter he scored a goal too.
After he stopped playing, he became a full-time coach, starting with Triestina who unfortunately were relegated from Serie A to C in two years. He then was manager for Cesena, Pisa, Vittorio Veneto and again Triestina in 1969 taking Enrico Radio's place. In 1970 he joined the Italian Football Federation and collaborated with Ferruccio Valcareggi and Enzo Bearzot.
He died in Trieste on December 23 2003
