After just four games Lazio had sacked manager Carlo Facchini and called up Juan Carlos Lorenzo for the first of his three stints with the Biancocelesti. The promotion race was very tight with lots of teams involved. At the end of the first half of the season Lazio were 6th just one point off Padova, Foggia and Lecco, third, and two behind Brescia. Messina were leaders.

Lazio were currently third in the company of Bari, one point behind Brescia, second. Messina, +6 over third place, already had a foot in Serie A.

The match

There were lots of Lazio fans at Como today arriving from Rome but also from nearby Switzerland and other parts of Lombardy. The home team were on form having beaten Foggia the previous game.

Not a lot happened in the first half an hour with the two teams intent on studying each other. Then in the 34th minute the Biancocelesti scored. Giancarlo Morrone took a free kick, crossed into the box and Orlando Rozzoni headed the ball in.

In doing so the Lazio centre forward clashed with Gianvito Geotti who had come out of his goal and in falling injured his knee. He tried to continue but he could hardly walk. The Biancocelesti were basically reduced to ten men. Towards the end of the first half the locals had a chance to equalise but Paolo Morelli squandered a sitter.

In the second half Como attacked with vehemence and after seven minutes managed to score. Roberto Derlin sent a cross into the box, the Lazio defence were admiring the scenery and Virginio Costa made it 1-1.

The locals pushed forward and Lazio defended well hoping to create something on the counter attack. And this is exactly what happened. In the 71st minute Morrone went off on the left, low cross into the box, massive scramble and Mario Maraschi put the ball behind Geotti.

Como attacked and forced Idilio Cei to save miraculously on a Bruno Ballarini shot in the 81st minute and another Morelli attempt shortly after.

The locals kept pressing but got frustrated since they were unable to score and tempers flared. Como manager Frank Pedersen spat at both Nello Governato and Juan Carlos Lorenzo. The fans threw stones at the team bus as they were leaving.

But Lazio deserved the two points and if it was not for the injury to Rozzoni, the game would have been similar to the win at Lecco.
