Lazio win prestigious trophy by beating Real Madrid on penalties

The season so far

Lazio, tired of Mr. 0-0, Giuseppe Materazzi, were becoming ambitious and as a consequence needed a manager who could lead them to a European Cup participation. Dino Zoff, who had just been dropped by Juventus despite winning both the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia, was the chosen man.

A change in mentality was needed to accompany the new manager so in came Karl-Heinz Riedle, German centre-forward who had just won the world cup, Armando Madonna, Sergio Domini and Roberto Bacci among others. Lazio said goodbye to Paolo Di Canio and Amarildo.

The Biancocelesti had begun their pre-season training at Macolin in Switzerland. Then they moved to La Linea de la Concepcion in Spain to play the prestigious Ciudad de la Línea Trophy. In the first game they beat Cadiz 3-2 thanks to a late goal from Roberto Soldà. Today was the final against the mighty Real Madrid who had beaten Peñarol.

The match: Sunday, August 12, 1990, Estadio Municipal, La Línea de la Concepción

Real Madrid started very well and Lazio were in trouble. The Biancocelesti, unlike Real, had played the day before and suffered physically. However, with few exceptions, the pressure was mainly in the number of corners against Lazio in the first 45 minutes: 8!!! The exceptions were a Gheorghe Hagi shot in the 22nd minute saved without not too many problems by Valerio Fiori, an attempted own goal by Angelo Gregucci in the 33rd minute with a Fiori miracle, and another good save by the Lazio keeper in the 43rd minute when Chendo tried a shot. The Biancocelesti made one dangerous foray into the Madrid half with a Madonna-Ruben Sosa combination which allowed the Uruguayan a shot, well saved by Pedro Jaro.

At the beginning of the second half Lazio almost scored. Domini tried a header, Sosa miskicked the ball, Riedle got to it but his shot was only just wide. In the 53rd minute Emilio Butragueño all alone in front of Fiori sent the ball wide and five minutes later a Domini free kick was saved by the Madrid keeper.

The match ended goalless so extra time was needed. In the 99th minute Lazio scored. Hugo Sanchez tried a big whack on a free kick but Fiori saved. The Biancoceleste goalkeeper then kicked the ball towards the Real half, the defenders were undecided what to do and hesitated, Sosa passed to Riedle who in front of the keeper deposited the ball in the net.

As if the pressure on the Lazio defence was not already enough, the Blancos then stepped up a gear and gave everything they had to equalise. Fiori was miraculous in the 116th minute on a Sanchez header. In the 120th minute there was one last corner for Real. The Lazio defence cleared and Pedrag Spasic tried a desperate bicycle kick back into the box. The ball managed to reach Sanchez who with a big whack beat Fiori.

Penalties. The first one to shoot was Sosa, goal. Then Sanchez, goal. Claudio Sclosa, goal. Miguel Tendillo, goal. Riedle, goal. Butragueño, saved by Fiori. Raffaele Sergio, goal. Michel, goal. Soldà, GOAL. Lazio Campeon!!!!! Nice to hear that after all these years!!!!

A prestigious win, there is a lot of hope for the season.

What happened next

This was supposed to be the start of a triumphant journey. But the team seemed to follow the path of their previous manager rather than having a new winning mentality. In the first half of the season the Biancocelesti drew 13 times in 17 games!!!! Almost on the verge of ridiculousness.

Lazio were also knocked out of Coppa Italia early, losing to Serie B team Modena.

The problem was that Domini and Madonna were not playing up to their previous standards. The former was considered to be an excellent playmaker and had shown a lot of potential in his previous club Cesena. But with Lazio it was a completely different story. He had the amazing ability of sending long passes in the only places on the pitch without Lazio players. Madonna should have taken Di Canio's place. At Atalanta he was very highly considered but did not settle down with Lazio and was more of a liability than an asset.

It took Zoff the whole of the first half of the season to substitute Madonna on a permanent basis with Roberto Bacci and a few more games to put Pedro Troglio in Domini's place. Things improved, less draws and a few more wins. Lazio even beat Juventus 1-0. But hopes of a UEFA Cup qualification ended with a loss in Milan against Inter in the penultimate game.

Lazio drew 19 times in the 1990-91 season, this sole fact was enough to understand that a lot more had to be done to the squad to be able to have any type of ambition.

Fiori and Sergio were the players with the most appearances (36) and Ruben Sosa the leading goal scorer (12).

Let's talk about Davide Lampugnani

Source Lazio Wiki

Davide Lampugnani was born in Mantua on July 4 1969. He started playing football in the youth teams of his home town club in Serie C2 and in 1986 signed for Napoli but never played. He went back to Mantua but did make many appearances even though Mantova were promoted, so he moved nearby to another Serie C2 team, Suzzara where he at least made 32 league appearances with one goal. Mantova were still in C1 and he returned there, playing 25 league games.

In 1990 he signed for Lazio. He was supposed to be a backup defender and that is exactly what he was, making 7 appearances.

He was then sold to Messina in Serie B, where he did not play much, before moving to Pisa where he stayed from 1992 to 1994 again in Serie B. In the summer of 1994 he went back to his hometown but made no league appearances. From 1995 to 2002 he played in Serie C2 in a number of teams: Sporting Benevento, Ponsacco, Biellese, Montichiari (two seasons) and then two seasons with Poggese, the first in Serie D and the second in C2.

He retired in 2002.

The highlight of his Lazio stay was winning the prestigious Ciudad de la Línea Trophy. In the final he substituted Gabriel Pin and played the last half an hour plus extra time.
