The season so far

The previous season Lazio had lost out on promotion by just one point due to the infamous ghost goal.

Lazio had to play Napoli at the Stadio Flaminio on March 4, 1962. It was a big match, if Lazio won the immediate return to Serie A would have been downhill. In the 76th minute the referee, Iginio Rigato, gave a free kick to Lazio. Gianni Seghedoni with a splendid shot put the ball in the back of the net. The Lazio players and fans celebrated, the Napoli players despaired. Rigato laughed. “It’s not a goal, the ball was out”. He claimed there was a hole in the net and the ball went right through it. Lazio protested but there was nothing the players could do. The Rai TV footage proved the referee’s mistake and Lazio appealed to the Lega Calcio, but the game’s result remained 0-0. The referee never admitted his mistake. Lazio missed out on promotion by one point, Napoli went into Serie A thanks to that point.

In the summer transfer window not a lot was done, with perhaps the exception of the return of Pierluigi Pagni from his loan to Cosenza. More interesting were the autumn transfers with Gianfranco Garbuglia, Gianbattista Moschino on loan and the return of fan favourite Orlando Rozzoni. Also signed was Gianmarco Calleri who would have an important impact on Lazio but in another role in 20 years’ time. Leaving Lazio were, among many, Giacomo Del Gratta, Franco Pezzullo and Maurilio Prini.

After just four games Lazio had sacked manager Carlo Facchini and called up Juan Carlos Lorenzo for the first of his three stints with the Biancocelesti. The promotion race was very tight with lots of teams involved. At the end of the first half of the season Lazio were 6th just one point off Padova, Foggia and Lecco, third, and two behind Brescia. Messina were leaders.

Lazio reached second place in the second half of March after four consecutive wins and stayed in the promotion zone from then on. They had a two-point lead over Brescia and Bari and were four behind Messina.

The match: Sunday, April 28, 1963, Stadio Olimpico, Rome

Compared to Lazio's previous home game (a 0-1 defeat to Parma) manager Juan Carlos Lorenzo’s team decided on a more prudent approach. A waiting game for the Biancocelesti as they controlled the match trying to find the right moment in which to score. As a consequence, the first half was rather boring even though all of this could have changed after just sixty seconds when Mario Maraschi sent a low cross into the box and Graziano Landoni squandered a sitter in front of Dino Zoff. Five minutes later it was Giancarlo Morrone who missed an opportunity when the Udinese keeper saved with his foot. That was all for the first half at least from Lazio’s point of view. The Bianconeri had a chance with Dimitri Pinti later on.

Nothing changed in the second 45 minutes, but as the Lazio fans started to boo, the Biancocelesti scored. In the 67th minute, a misunderstanding between Idilio Cei and Vincenzo Gasperi gave Pinti a chance but his volley was off target. On the counter attack, Maraschi went off on the left, dribbled past a defender, faced Zoff and passed to Paolo Bernasconi who comfortably scored.

Five minutes later Morrone slalomed past three defenders and took a shot: crossbar. In the 84th Zoff was nothing short of miraculous on another Morrone chance. The Italo-Argentinian in the 89th minute dribbled through most of the Udinese defence, and gave the ball to Maraschi for the 2-0.

Absolutely marvellous Morrone in the second half. Unstoppable.

What happened next

Serie A arrived in the very last game, after winning 2-0 against Pro Patria. A triumphant year for Lazio who came second behind Messina and in the company of Bari. A deserved return to Serie A.

Idilio Cei and Diego Zanetti were the players with most appearances (39), Giancarlo Morrone, Paolo Bernasconi and Orlando Rozzoni the top goal scorers (10).

Let's talk about Giuseppe Galvanin

Giuseppe Galvanin was born in Vicenza on April 1, 1938.

He started playing football as a defender for Marzotto Valdagno in Serie B in 1958 and stayed there a couple of years before being sold to Vicenza in 1960.

He however was never used and in the autumn transfer window signed for Tevere Roma in Serie C.

In the summer of 1962 he was part of the squad that did the pre-season training with Roma but was then sold to Como.

In November he signed for Lazio. He played very little, just three appearances, and at the end of the season went back to Tevere Roma.

In 1964 he signed for Trani. He played five seasons in Puglia, first in Serie B (two seasons) then Serie C (another two) and a final year in Serie D.

His last year he spent with Clodia Sottomarina again in the fourth tier.
