Final!!!!
A Correa goal in the second half puts Lazio in the Coppa Italia final
Also on this day:

The season so far
The previous season Lazio had been heavily penalised by the introduction of the VAR. The referees took it in turns to not use it when Lazio played or to use it in the wrong way. But Lazio had played well and, as usual, just missed out of Champions League qualification, arriving fifth, losing the decisive match at home against Inter.
The star signings of the summer were Francesco Acerbi, who took the place in the centre of defence left vacant by Stefan De Vrij who had gone to Inter as a free agent refusing to sign a new contract with Lazio, and Joaquin Correa, exciting Argentinian player from Sevilla, who substituted Felipe Anderson sold to West Ham United. Other signings included Riza Durmisi (Betis), Valon Berisha (Salzburg), free agents Silvio Proto and Milan Badelj plus the return of Danilo Cataldi from his loan at Benevento. Also leaving were Davide Di Gennaro (loan to Salernitana), Ivan Vargic (loan, Anorthosis), Nani (end of loan, Valencia), Filip Djordjevic (end of contract) and Luca Crecco (Pescara)
So far, the season had been a little bit disappointing. Lazio were currently eighth, four points away from Milan and Atalanta in fourth position. Unable to come to terms with the bigger teams, Lazio also occasionally struggled with the smaller ones. The star players such as Luis Alberto and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic were not playing up to par. With five games left, Champions League was no longer a possibility.
In Europa League Lazio came second in their group behind Eintracht Frankfurt but were knocked out in the round of 32 by Sevilla, also due to being denied an obvious penalty, which could have been a game changer, in the return match. VAR was yet to be introduced for the European competition.
In Coppa Italia, the Biancocelesti had beaten Novara 4-1 in the round of 32, and Inter away on penalties in the quarter final. They had played the first semi-final leg at home against Milan and had drawn 0-0. A Coppa Italia win was probably the only way the Biancocelesti could play in Europe the following year.
The match: Wednesday, April 24, 2019, Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan
The previous season Lazio and Milan had faced each other in the semi-finals. Both games ended goalless and the Rossoneri eventually won on penalties. After another goalless draw in the first leg, the Biancocelesti were looking to score in order to reach the final.
Just like the other games this one too was rather blocked. The bad news for the Lazio fans was the fact that after just 17 minutes Simone Inzaghi was forced to substitute Sergej Milinkovic-Savic with Marco Parolo.
The Biancocelesti did try to score but they almost always made a mistake at the last moment, hence lots of potential chances but no concrete ones. In the 26th minute a Ciro Immobile shot was easily saved by Pepe Reina. In the 28th minute Davide Calabria tried a shot from outside the box forcing Thomas Strakosha to parry into corner. In the 43rd minute Suso had a chance from the edge of the penalty area but his shot went wide.
In injury time there was a freekick for Lazio on the right. Luis Alberto crossed, Bastos’ first attempt was walled, the ball came back to him but from a favourable position he kicked it wide. Immediately after another chance for the Biancocelesti. Joaquin Correa one-twoed with Immobile and tried a shot from an angled position but Reina saved.
Lazio seemed to have found the way to put Milan in difficulty and in the 51st minute Lucas Leiva from outside the box tried his luck, greaĺt save from Reina. On the subsequent corner, again Bastos had a chance but his header went wide. In the 55th minute Correa tried a curling shot, Reina again parried. Three minutes later the Biancocelesti went on the counter attack. Immobile passed to Correa who from a difficult angle made it 1-0. A deserved lead.
Milan tried a comeback, they needed two goals now, but Lazio remained in control and in the 83rd minute Immobile had a chance to make it two but from the centre of the box his volley, following a Parolo pass, went over the crossbar. In the 90th minute again Immobile with a chance but his shot was saved into corner by Reina.
Lazio won and were in the final.

What happened next
Lazio effectively gave up any hope of Champions League after the home defeat against Atalanta with three matches still to go.
But there was glory.
The Coppa Italia was won by Lazio against Atalanta with goals from Milinkovic-Savic and Correa in the second half. Hence, Lazio qualified for the 2019-20 Europa League and the Super Coppa.
Francesco Acerbi was the player with most appearances (50 in all competitions), Ciro Immobile the top scorer (19).
What happened in Serie A 2018-19

The scudetto the previous season had been won by Juventus four points ahead of Napoli. Roma had come third. With five games to the end Juventus had a four-point lead but then Napoli had won in Turin reducing the gap to just one. But a collapse in Florence and a home draw with Torino, handed the scudetto to the Bianconeri.

Inter added Stefan de Vrij and Lautaro Martinez, Milan Gonzalo Higuian and Lazio Francesco Acerbi and Joaquin Correa.
Juventus were the favourites and it did not look as if there would be much competition.
Chievo Verona were given a three-point docking due to administrative irregularities before the season started.

They all won their last games so Napoli, Inter and Atalanta joined Juve for the following year’s top tier European competition. Milan, due to failing to adhere to the UEFA financial fair play regulations, were excluded from Europe, so Roma and Torino would get to play Europa League. Lazio won the Coppa Italia beating Atalanta 2-0 securing their place in the Europa League.
Empoli and Genoa fought to avoid relegation with the Tuscans one point ahead with one game to go. In the last game Empoli lost to Inter and Genoa drew in Florence. Since the Rossoblu had beaten Empoli both at home and away, they stayed in Serie A while the Tuscans joined Frosinone and Chievo in Serie B. Brescia, Lecce and Verona were promoted.
Fabio Quagliarella (Sampdoria) was top scorer with 26 goals.
