Alessio Romagnoli, born at Anzio on January 12 1995, is an Italian professional footballer who plays as centre-back for Lazio and the Italian national team.
He was born in Anzio, near Rome, on January 12, 1995. Noticed by Roma legend Bruno Conti, at ten years old he joined Roma, despite being a Lazio supporter and having Alessandro Nesta as his idol. After having gone through all the various age groups, Zdenek Zeman gave him his chance in the Coppa Italia game against Atalanta on December 11, 2012 and 11 days later he debuted in Serie A against Milan. In his second game on March 3 he even scored a goal in Roma’s victory against Genoa. In the 2013-14 season he played with more regularity as a left back. In 2014 he was loaned to Sampdoria and became a regular player under Sinisa Mihajlovic but in the centre of defence. Back from Genoa, Roma sold him to Milan in 2015.
He stayed seven years in Milan and appeared in 247 games (10 goals). He was captain of the team that won the scudetto in 2021-22 and also won a Super Coppa in 2016. He became one of the best Italian defenders. But Romagnoli had an objective: to play with Lazio. He refused to renew his contract and kept on telling Lazio Sports Director Igli Tare that he wanted to come to Lazio. In his last year he played less due to injury and because he did not want to renew his agreement. Once his contract expired he fulfilled his childhood dream.
In his first year at Lazio he appeared in 42 games in all competitions and scored two goals. He is a great defender, perfect sense of timing, calm, good with the ball, an ideal player for Maurizio Sarri. He played really well in 2022-23 and Lazio had 21 clean sheets in Serie A. The next season was no so good for him nor for Lazio but he made 39 appearances.
In Nazionale he has 13 caps but since he has joined Lazio he has been ignored by Roberto Mancini. Amazing considering that alongside Nicolò Casale, Lazio had the best Italian defensive duo of Serie A in 2022-23.
